The Other September 11

On 11 September 1973, in response to formal requests by his nation's judiciary and legislature, General Augusto Pinochet led a military coup against the regime of the elected president of Chile, Salvador Allende, an avowed Marxist whose government had placed foreign agents of revolution in positions of power, stolen the private property of Chilean citizens, nationalized many of the country's major industries, and wrecked Chile's economy and sense of public order. The coup succeded: stolen property was returned, the foreign terrorists with Chile were hunted down and eliminated, and law and order were restored to the country. Allende died by his own hand, shooting himself with a gun given him by Fidel Castro of Cuba.

On 13 December 2004, General Pinochet (now 86 years of age) was indicted by a Chilean court for the disappearance of nine “opposition activists” and the killing of one of them during his regime.

Of course, General Pinochet’s most recent indictment has little to do with his brutally effective war on Chile’s domestic terrorists during the 1970s. His real “crime”is that he fought communism and won — and for that crime the socialists and Marxists of the world will never forgive him. Stalin sent a man with a steel pick to Mexico to show Leon Trotsky what happens to those who dare cross the old hammer and sickle; for today’s wannabe Stalins, getting a judge to send down an indictment against a man who fought them and won is no big deal. Great Stalin always gets his man.

Pinochet was a military dictator. I make no bones about that. He held power for fifteen years, all the while ruthlessly searching out and destroying those whom he deemed to pose a threat to Chile. During his war on his country’s dometic enemies, winning came first, and civil rights came second — and, sometimes, not at all. As is true in every war, there is no doubt that some of those who ended up injured or dead during his regime were innocent.

But that is the nature of war. War means killing people and breaking things, and and one cannot blame those who wage war on behalf of their country for doing so. No reasonable person holds the men who flew the airplanes that firebombed Dresden and Tokyo in World War Two personally responsible for the murders of the thousands of innocent civilians who perished at their hands. They killed those people accidentally, in the course of their duty as soldiers in wartime, not out of any personal malice or spite. The sad truth of war is that sometimes the innocent as well as the guilty suffer. So far as is known, General Pinochet never killed anyone arbitrarily, out of spite, or for personal gain. He killed them because his job was to kill the people who wished to kill his country. Civilized people everywhere call such a man a patriot.

Except the civilized, liberal people of the pampered, hedonistic, materialistic West. To them, the only things worth fighting for are sodomy, abortions, and the right to pillage the public coffers. To them, a patriot is a criminal, a dangerous sentimentalist with a penchant for violence. There is no room for heroes in a world where everyone is equal.

Pinochet’s critics are an amusing bunch — the kind of folks who think that it is more noble to sit back and watch a gang of criminals rape one‘s wife rather than use violence against them and risk violating the rapists’ precious civil rights. “Let the bad guys do whatever they want, as long as my personal moral hymen remains intact!” they seem to say.

In the part of Texas I come from, a person with that sort of attitude is called a coward.

“But Pinochet acted outside the political process!,” his detractors cry. “Allende was lawfully elected by the people of Chile!” My reply: Yeah? Well, so what? News flash, gang: communism is not a politcal force, like the Green Party or the local save-the-endangered-prairie-snail brigade. Despite their kooky politics, the Green Party and the snail-hugger club are composed by and large of civilized people — people who believe in law and order and who would never dream of using murder and terror to enforce their will upon the rest of us.

On the other hand, communism is a form of terrorism — an inherently evil ideology that feeds upon the blood of innocent people in order to gain power; Lenin and his Bolsheviks made that plain to all sensible people in 1917. Communism is based upon terror. Communism is terror. And a civilized country can no more allow communists to come to power than it could allow the IRA, the Klan, or the Islamic fundamentalists to come to power.

And elections be damned. Vox populi is not vox Dei as of the last time I checked, and the republican system is not a suicide pact. Here’s a thought experiment for the no-violence-outside-the-law crowd: let's say that a majority of the people of the United States were to all go nuts at once and cause a native-born Osama bin-Laden type Islamic fundamentalist to be lawfully elected president of the United States, God forbid. Now, would it be better to let him burn our churches, put women in burkhas, and kill all the Jews, or would it be better to support his overthrow by any means necessary, including an extra-constitutional military coup?

I dunno about the rest of you, but I’d be all for a coup myself.

General Augusto Pinochet is a hero, He singlehandedly prevented his country from being turned into a Pacific version of Cuba, and in so doing won a critical battle of World War Three, the so-called “cold war” — that fifty-year global battle for dominance between the Judeo-Christian, capitalist West and the atheistic communists of the USSR and her thralls. Did he get his hands dirty in the process? Yes, he did. He dealt with the communist bandits who hijacked his country in the only proper manner: he killed them. By so doing, he prevented them from killing Chile, a proud nation which is now the jewel of South America.

What General Pinochet did was heroic in the best sense of the word: he did his duty and accepted the consequences. His duty was to defend his country against all enemies, and he did so. Then, after attempting to undo the damage Allende had caused, he voluntarily relinquished the power he had assumed in time of emeregency, and submitted his actions to the judgment of others and of history. A soldier can do no more than that for his native land.

Was General Pinochet a dictator? Yes he was. Was he brutal? Yes, at times he was. But were his actions justified? Only God and history can judge that question. For today, Pinochet stands under indictment by a court of the nation he did so much to preserve. How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child!

Meanwhile, not ninety miles from the shores of the United States a far worse dictator still holds his country in an iron-fisted grip of oppression and tyranny — to the lauds of many of the same human-rights crusaders that damn Pinochet.

Where are the cries of outrage from these foes of dictatorship when Cuba is discussed? When is Fidel Castro going to pay for his crimes?

Note: This piece was written in 2004. I see no reason to change a single word.

Pinochet died on 10 December, 2006, without having been convicted of any crimes committed during his dictatorship.

Thanks, Mr. Russo. It's heartening to know at least one person out there besides me recognizes true heroism when he sees it. ¡Viva España!

FYI--Something you might want to take into consideration:

"The Torture Colony: In a remote part of Chile,an evil German evangelist built a utopia whose members helped the Pinochet regime performits foulest deeds."

Dear J,

Thank you for writing.

I read the linked piece with interest. While I share your repugnance towards pedophiles and cult leaders, including the one referenced in the article, I do not believe that the late General Pinochet was either; neither do I believe that any brutality and immorality committed by the cult leader or its members against the enemies of Chile was ordered by Pinochet out of any sadistic desire. I think he saw such methods as being merely the quickest and most efficient means of winning the war.

While it is likely that he condoned and permitted brutality and immoral acts during his war with the communists, I it is important to distinguish between the late General Pinochet's aims and the means used to achieve those aims. When evil means are used towards a good end, sin is committed; however, it is worth remembering that in every war soldiers are forced to use lies, brutality, and other illicit means to achieve victory, which can be a moral good. In such cases, the sin incurred by the doers of these deeds remains, and must be confessed and absolved. I am certain that a just God did not fail to forgive those penitents who committed sin in the course of the war against Communism in Chile; and, among these, I include the late General Pinochet.

Of course it is always wrong to torment an innocent person or take innocent life; however, in war it is not always possible to know with certainty who is innocent, or to easily separate those known to be innocent from the guilty. As a result, in every war innocent people are inevitably hurt, dispossessed, and killed, no matter how careful the warring parties might be. In the final analysis, General Pinochet was a soldier acting in defense of his nation, and in that defense was forced to take certain actions that were both brutal and immoral. This, sadly, is war.

How will God judge General Pinochet's deeds? No one can say. I would never presume to guess the eternal destiny of another man. I can only hope that, like all of us, he has been forgiven by the Divine Majesty for any sins he committed in this world during the performance of his duty. As for his successful war on communism, I believe that history will rightly judge him a hero, as I do.

Sincerely,

Bruce Lewis

Rape kill pillage and burn
when i was a little child- i used to play innocently with army soldiers- play guns with water or lights and sounds- play cops and robbers with guns- the battle between cowboys and Indians(first peoples)- a child will play with anything and see the fun in everything. and then a decade goes by, where many young boys with goodnness in their hearts begin to be harden- to sing songs like " rape kill pillage and burn"- as in force recon and other infantry units- it is the same all over the world-

WHY?

why does man subconsciously have this extreme destructive behavior towards one another-

why does man force man to submit in prison systems such as with rape and control-etc etc

why do the children of god has this feature of our behavior-

YOU DESERVE IT-

if you read this message upon a wonderful invention of only recent years-you are probably of western society or at least a level of stability and sustenance to live life with opportunities as opposed to third world nations or poor persons within the community of a richer industrialized society- you are privileged and lucky somewhat-

what do you with most of your time as half the worlds children die of a very simple ailment from dirty drinking water- it seems clear that when a human being is given free will and freedom with too much excess that may be used for pleasure or selfish means- one will do so- over and over again a more privileged individual will find themselves in a world where they seek immediate satisfaction for themselves- to live for themselves- to look out for themselves -

prior to one century- the vast majority of the worlds population still cut their arm to bleed out infections-without refrigeration for stored food- man was always on the hunt for fresh food- without ease of electricity for warmth and utilization to make our lives far more easier and comfortable- prior to one century- the vast majority struggled just to stay alive-

thus-prior to one century- most human beings since beginning of time struggled very very hard just to stay alive against natures fury and competing families just trying to stay alive-

so why do we get ugly about it?

it seems evident and clear most human beings-children of god-know there is an intrinsic feeling of wonder just being alive- to live life to its fullest- to enjoy whenever you can- like an amusement park ride so to speak- but the earth itself is the ride- and the duration of the ride is life itself- upon our death we are in the spirit world- maybe we wait for another chance- infinity is at hand-
however, for this topic-let us understand it is obvious this amusement park ride is a function OF ALL OF US to come together and help one another so we can make civilization- and man has done well in such a short time since rubbing two sticks-

time to spread upon the earth- time to come together in population density to receive ideas from one another- time to achieve one finding after another- cannot jump any steps- for one must walk before run- or babel before talk-

just like in your own life how quick you are to just "lay around" to procrastinate- to just "have fun" over and over again-

as the world is still primitive- still cold from winters-still sick from simple ailments-still seeking stability as some neighbors just think for themselves-

THUS- the hungry eyes and mouths strike out-pain is in their gut and soul- and so pain is how they lash out- from an individual to a nation state- it is the same- if man cannot share resources between one another- they will battle-

watch a child try to share a toy- it is in our instinctive behavior to control and dominate-

WHY- so man may push one another and be on the edge for us to WAKE UP AND WORK TOGETHER OR FIGHT-

if you are not my friend- then how can i trust you to be neutral and not my enemy for your own selfish means-

this behavior has prope3lled mankind to such a state of civilization so fast that a time has come-

first a period of media and technology for all man to witness to themselves we are truly one race- all children to god- so many shows where we may learn from one another- even prison shows that teach man even the bad or so called evil ones are humans with a reason why they did it- from lack of love or food or shelter- man will struggle and fight if he must-

man has a best friend in western society- the dog- eaten in other parts of the world for food- but in the west man learns why he is your best friend- you feed it- you shelter it-you accept it as family-

do this to any human being and you will find a friend- or go thru life seeking just one on your hand if lucky-

what reward is there in heaven if you love only what loves you- for those that strike at your cheek- do so because they have a problem- they lash out subconsciously for someone to help- will you be the one to help or ignore?

what goes around comes around- the great cosmic balance of man proclaimed since beginning of time-

I believe the time has come to extinguish this negative feature of mankind- the time to lay down the sword between one another in order for the defensive shield many human beings have upon their soul for protection from abuse by one another- for when one does so- the amount of energy and vitality akin to a child shows itself in man again as they began life this way- the true spirit of mankind to enlighten one another-

man is cruel to one another at times because man is lazy and selfish at times to one another-

do you need your neighbors house to be on fire before you help- or see the writings on the wall and act-

do you need your own child to become sick from cancer and or ailments to know man has many problems in life yet to be conquered and for you to help when you are healthy and stable-

half the worlds children die from simple drinking water- remember the Christ- agreed by mighty Rome and many others if god has loved one as a son- it would be one that seeks the sick and poor- to defend the weak-

or must you become weak-sick and poor to understand why man must be mans best friend-

whether by peaceful death or not- the outcome ids the same- illumination of the afterlife and the spirit world- all is understood-all is known-

our duty continues-THY will be done on earth as it is in heaven
